Transport woes

36th entry: 28november2005 00:20
listening to: why georgia - john mayer

getting rather irritated with taking public transport lately. started off with yesterday when i had to walk 20 minutes from the interchange to my home as there wasn't any more bus services left. most services end around 11pm or so, with the exception of feeder buses which end later (around 12 plus). this very much restricts the ideas of hanging out late with friends or having late-night supper. furthermore, i'm beginning to feel the pinch of taking public transport everyday. surprisingly, it can amount to quite a substantial sum every month, needless to say it's still comparably cheaper to owning a car but the money spent on transport can be rather overwhelming at times and you wish you had walked to your destinations instead (but obviously the time factor comes into play...) i realise i've been spending quite alot on public transport alone, average $20 per week which adds to $80 per month and i haven't factored in the cab fares...

another reason why i dislike public transport is because i stay in the easternmost part of singapore and travelling to me becomes a real hassle and plenty of time is spent. took MRT back just now and realised that some commuters can be really irritating. a bunch of schoolkids sitting on the floor right in the middle of the carriage, a lady who kept nudging me with her elbow (unknowingly or not doesn't matter to me...), slightly bigger size people who intentionally took up 2 seats (depriving me of my seat), some workers leaning his body on the pole so i had nothing to hold onto, a bunch of older ladies talking loudly and inconsiderately. actually i'm also not sure why i have become so repulsive towards public transport, maybe i was just tired and needed a seat badly and had to suffer the loud chatter and... or maybe a part of me just wished so badly to own a car of my own. and that conveniently brings me to the next topic on private transport.

Owning a car seemingly appears rather impossible. with the still-costly prices of petrol, endless parking fees, exorbitant season parking fees, ERP charges, maintenance and insurance and road tax and not forgetting the more frequent trips for supper and midnight movies and shopping, which equals to spending more money. though now that i have a class 3 license but no car to drive, i've become accustommed to the idea that public transport should be the option for me (or rather the only option i have), until the recent spate of incidents which made me understand the convenience and reliability of owning a car...
